Father's Day

This year we're doing something different on Father's Day. The first thing is we're building a playhouse and we need the Dad's to help! The second thing is we're running the Generation Game with prizes. To play the Generation Game a Dad will need their kid (it is a Father and child game). Dad's can enter as many times as they like but kids can only enter once!

Come along on Sunday 5th September from 9:30am (bring some tools) for a fun morning and some super food (not to mention the great coffee we always have at Petone)!

Also on Father's Day is our first ever Dixie and Gospel concert. This is at 3:30pm and is suitable for all ages. Bring your kids and let them experience music played by an ensemble of excellent local musicians.

Entry is free and coffee and cake will be available for sale.

This Sunday is The Great Escape Cafe ... doors open at 9am! Don't panic though and think we're playing episodes of the TV program Neighbours, rather think about the last few weeks as we've considered what kind of neighbour we are globally.

That is right, unfortunately the weather isn't conducive to a car wash and it is raining on our parade. The car wash is cancelled BUT we hope we'll see you at Kneedrill (9am) or @10 tomorrow (10am).

This Saturday starting at 11am we're having a FREE car wash. There will also be a sausage sizzle ($1) and super coffee ($2). Come along and help, get your car washed, and enjoy a sausage with a coffee!

What is church?

Today we had the final part in our what is church? series. Big thanks to (Major) Barry Keane for coming along and helping us stretch our understanding of just what church is and could be. The line that stands out to me as something to keep at the front of our minds is:

We argue about form and forget what our (the Church's) function is.

That is a big challenge and the only way we can stay focussed is to let our lives become so infected by Jesus that He spills into every word we say, all of our actions, and into everyday of our lives.

What is church?

Today we start a little build up to our @10 this week where we will ask, what is church? Consider the following thoughts, reflect and take notes then share with us on Sunday @10 your response to these 3 thoughts.

John O. Gooch reflects in his book Did you know? that Christianity was the first non-temple-based religion ever to emerge. In the minds of the early Christians, the people - not the architecture - constituted a sacred space. The early Christians understood that they themselves - corporately - were the temple of Go and the house of God.
In his book The Radical Christian, Arthur Wallis writes in the Old Testament, God had a sanctuary for His people; in the New, God has His people as a sanctuary.
Read the following bible verses to see what the bible says about church:

Ephesians 2:20-22
Hebrews 3:5-66
1 Timothy 3:15
1 Peter 2:5 and 4:17

Reflect on what you consider church should be ... not what it was, or is ... but what you think it should be. Make a note and share with us on Sunday.

What is prayer?

We've just completed 48 hours of prayer together (and the 'we' includes people all around New Zealand and from the far flung corners of the world)! We were joined together first through Jesus and came together to pray not only for Petone, not only for The Salvation Army, not only for Congress, but for God's kingdom to be established around the world.

At our @10 gathering focussed on The Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) and spent our time at 7 different stations. Each one of them looked at a different part of The Lord's Prayer and asked us to reconsider how we thought of it. There was also a bonus 8th station in the middle of the hall related specifically to praying for Petone.

The Success Sunday

This Sunday we're talking about success. In fact we're not only talking about it but we're having a small panel of people talk to us about success in their life! As always we won't be satisfied unless you've had an opportunity to share some of your success with us.

The panel will be telling us their definition of success, their greatest success, and what they want their epitaph to read (i.e. the success they're pursuing for their life). You'll have the chance to ask the panel questions as well as share your success paradigm.

Start thinking now about how you define success in your life ... your family ... your community ... your life!

Report from the TGE FIFA Cafe

Wow is the only way to describe TGE (The Great Escape) FIFA cafe! 136 people scoffing pancakes, slurping Ripe coffee, watching All Whites games on the big screen, listening to the ethereal music from the live band (thanks to Kilbirnie Salvation Army), and kicking a ball around in our football championship! It was an unbelievable morning that left the team buzzing.

This Sunday coming is the success conversation, different to normal @10 services but just waiting for you to come along and tell us about success in your life. Don't miss out!

TGE - FIFA World Cup Special!

Just a quick note to say a couple of thank you's! First to everyone who attended and helped on Friday at the Playgroup fish n' chip/movie night. It was by all measures a huge success and smoothly coordinated thanks to everybody helping out.

The Formation Meeting yesterday also deserves another thank you to everyone who shared. It was a really great to not only hear everyone sharing, but also to sense the unity of vision in what is unfolding in Petone.

As you prepare it we thought it would be helpful for you to consider some of the following topics that will be discussed. Think & pray about them as you prepare for the meeting. Mission - Our mission is the mission of The Salvation Army: We aim to care for people and transform lives through God in Christ by the Holy Spirits power. We work for the reform of society by alleviating poverty, deprivation and disadvantage, and by challenging evil, injustice and oppression, in the name of Jesus.

Vision - What is your vision for Petone? 3 or 5 years from now what do you see here at Petone?
Values - What do you believe the core values of Petone should be? These will be the values that permeate everything we do.
Foundations - What are the foundational pillars that Petone should be built on? These are helpful for keeping us on track in seeing our vision realised.
Leadership - What are the key components that leadership at Petone will adhere to?
